Get Ready For Winter

Winter in Alberta can arrive quickly, and before we know it, our beautiful fall trails are covered in snow and ice.

At Active Paws Adventures, we love winter hikes just as much as summer adventures—but a little preparation goes a long way in keeping our dogs safe, comfortable, and happy throughout the season.

Whether this is your dog's first Alberta winter or they're a seasoned snow explorer, here are a few things to keep in mind before the cold weather arrives.

🧥 Dress for the Weather

Not every dog needs a winter coat, but many do.

Puppies, senior dogs, smaller breeds, lean dogs, and short-haired breeds can lose body heat quickly in colder temperatures.

If your dog shivers, lifts their paws frequently, or seems reluctant to continue walking, a properly fitted winter jacket may help keep them warm and comfortable.

🐾 Protect Those Paws

Snow isn't usually the biggest challenge—it's the salt, sand, ice melt, and frozen surfaces that can be tough on sensitive paws.

Before heading outside, consider using a protective paw balm or properly fitted dog boots.

After every walk:

✔️ Wipe off salt and ice melt.

✔️ Remove snow or ice balls from between the paw pads.

✔️ Check for cracks, redness, or irritation.

Healthy paws make for happy adventures.

🌡️ Alberta Weather Can Change Quickly

Living in Alberta means we can experience sunshine one day and Arctic temperatures the next.

At Active Paws Adventures, your dog's safety always comes first.

Throughout the winter months, we continually monitor:

❄️ Air temperature

🌬️ Wind chill

🧊 Trail and sidewalk conditions

🌨️ Snowfall

🐾 Each dog's individual comfort and tolerance

Depending on the conditions, we may occasionally:

• Choose more sheltered walking routes

• Shorten walk durations

• Adjust pickup or drop-off times

• Modify our daily schedule to avoid the coldest part of the day

These decisions are always made with your dog's health, comfort, and safety in mind.

If weather conditions require any significant changes, we'll communicate with you as early as possible.

✂️ Winter Grooming Matters

A healthy winter coat starts with regular grooming.

Brushing your dog helps remove loose fur, prevents painful matting, and keeps their coat insulating properly.

Keeping the fur between their paw pads neatly trimmed can also help reduce snow and ice buildup.

💧 Don't Forget Hydration

Cold weather can be surprisingly dehydrating.

Always provide fresh water after walks and make sure outdoor water bowls don't freeze.

🧠 Keep Them Moving

When the weather is too harsh for long outdoor adventures, mental exercise becomes just as important.

Try:

🐾 Puzzle feeders

🐾 Nose work games

🐾 Short training sessions

🐾 Indoor enrichment activities

Keeping your dog mentally engaged helps burn energy and supports their overall well-being.

🌲 Winter Adventures Are Worth It

Some of our favourite adventures happen after the snow falls.

Fresh powder, quiet forests, crisp mornings, and happy dogs bounding through the snow are just a few of the reasons we love Alberta winters.

With a little preparation—and a little flexibility—winter can become one of the most enjoyable seasons of the year for both you and your dog.

From all of us at Active Paws Adventures, we're looking forward to another season of snowy trails, wagging tails, and unforgettable memories.

Stay warm. Stay safe. And let's make this winter another amazing adventure together! ❄️🐾❤️
